DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

Health and Wellness Programs include Diabetes Prevention at the Central Virginia YMCA

Redefine Your Health. Transform Your Life.

Of the 86 million people with prediabetes, only 10 percent know their condition. In addition to the high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, people with prediabetes are also at risk of developing other chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke. The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program is specifically for people who have "pre-diabetes" or are at risk for Type 2 diabetes. The group-based program covers nutrition, physical activity and behavior modification. Click below for more information.

In the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program a trained lifestyle coach facilitates a small group of adults to discuss behavior changes that can improve the health of participants. The program consists of 25 one-hour sessions delivered over the course of a year. The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program is for adults who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. You will learn how to reduce your chances of developing the disease.

The lifestyle changes outlined in the program—modest weight loss, healthy eating, and regular physical activity—have been shown to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
