All YMCA facilities are currently closed in order to protect the safety of our members and our community. Just as we have been doing, we will continue to follow the mandates and recommendations of local, state and national officials in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The mission of the Y is bigger than a building, and we are asking you to please stay with us during this time by continuing to invest in your membership. Our YMCA is committed to supporting your well-being and responding to the challenges facing our community during this difficult time, and we look forward to reopening our doors for you in the near future.
In the meantime, our dedicated staff are fully committed to providing you opportunities to stay connected, active and healthy.
HOW THE Y IS HELPING...
Today, the needs of our community are more urgent than ever. We have mobilized our resources and partners to launch initiatives and programs that will be crucial in the coming weeks:
Fill the Bus for Our Future
We have neighbors in need, and we are hoping you can help us fill that need by helping us fill our bus! School is out, and some of our kids need a little extra help gaining access to healthy snacks and activities to keep their bodies busy and their brains engaged. Similar to a food drive, the Y will be collecting the needed items listed below from our community members. We will then distribute “healthy body busy bags” to children that live in neighborhoods with the greatest need.
Emergency Child Care for Healthcare Workers
We are working with Lynchburg City Schools and Centra Health to provide child care options for essential personnel. Starting Monday, we will be providing child care for Centra Health personnel. Lynchburg City Schools will provide lunch, and our full-time staff that can assist, will be all hands on deck to ensure that our local healthcare providers can take care of you and our community, while we care for their children.
Supporting our Neighbors
We recognize that many of our members fall into the "at risk" category. Our program directors are reaching out to our members. We live streaming classes and support services so they can continue to participate in programs that sustain their health, in spirit, mind and body.
YMCA All the Time
We continue to share resources to keep our community safely connected, active and healthy during this time in spirit, mind and body via online fitness classes, and a library of wellness resources.

Filling the Gap
The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood. There has been a drastic drop in blood donations due to the Coronavirus. Several thousand donations that were previously scheduled have now been cancelled. We are working with the American Red Cross to schedule additional blood drives. Our next blood drive is on May 8th, at the Jamerson Family YMCA.
Family and Community Resources
With recent school closures, families are adjusting to a new normal. It can be overwhelming to contemplate what to do with new-found time. We have compiled a list of resources for parents and children.
The YMCA of Central Virginia will have drop off bins outside of the front entrances at each of our 3 Y locations. Please bring canned and dry good products and we will deliver your items to the Rivermont Area Emergency Food Pantry (RAEFP) and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank during this time of great need.
Please make sure your donated items are dropped off in a grocery paper sack, plastic bag or in a box. Also, please make sure your items have not expired. We will disinfect each item and deliver them for you.
The RAEFP and the Food Bank serves the City of Lynchburg and all surrounding counties. All individuals and families are pre-approved through the social services office of that area. Thank you for supporting our neighbors and friends during their time of need.

The Y can’t provide these necessary services without your support. We don’t know how long this crisis will last, and we need your help to ensure we have the resources needed to deliver these crucial initiatives for as long as they are needed. Here’s how YOU can help...
- Give Today
- #staywiththeY by maintaining your membership
- #fightfortheY by sharing our message
- Convert your membership dollars into a donation
We can and will get through this together. By continuing to be a part of your Y, you are helping to expand and mobilize these services, and help to ensure that the YMCA of Central Virginia will be here for good.
Stay With Us
Your membership makes a difference in our community. If you choose to stay active there is nothing you need to do. By keeping your membership active during this time we can remain fully focused on our efforts to help our community stay strong in spirit, mind and body.
Thank you so much for staying with us.
Convert Your Membership Dues
You can choose to turn you membership dues into a tax deductible donation. When we reopen, we will convert you back to your regular membership. Just know that we are incredibly grateful that you have chosen to stay with us. The YMCA will provide a tax receipt of your charitable donation at the end of the year.
Thank you for your support during this time of uncertainty.
